Textile Art Fail

Wednesday, 21 January 2015

Hello Friends!

I've been really obsessed with textile art lately. I know it's a popular trend, but I find myself going back and forth. While I think some textile art is beautiful, I feel like it can look a bit too retro, and not in a good way.

I love, love, love this fibre art by Megan Shimek. You can find this item, and others at Have Company. For now it'll have to be small steps, but it's my dream to make such a beautiful statement piece for my home.

I then stumbled upon this piece of textile art from Urban Outfitters:

At first I thought the $72 price tag was legitimate, but the more I looked at the piece, I thought, I can totally do that!

I purchased an eight-inch round floral wreath in gold for around a buck, and had the extra yarn lying in my craft room. The only thing that's needed for this project is time, which took me about three hours to complete.

I cut what felt like millions of pieces of yarn, but what was likely around 200. I then used a slipknot to attach the strings to the wreath, see below:
I kept attaching the strings until I was pleased with the amount of coverage. Here's where I made my mistake: I gave the whole thing a haircut and then hated what I had made.

See what I mean?! I think I went a little over the top with the scissors. I had a shape in mind, kind of like an arrowhead and I couldn't make it translate.

I decided to move it to its final resting place, the bedroom, and keep it there until I like it. I no longer have a shuddering feeling when I see it, so I guess I'm making progress!

Until next time's crafting fail, happy crafting!
