Georges Briard

Hello Friends!

This weekend was full of fun and thrifting. I was able to make it to two estate sales and many thrift shops and antique markets. Needless to say I'm pretty tired after all the thrifting.

The estate sale that I attended was bustling with people when I showed up in the wee hours of the morning. I always feel awkward walking in peoples' homes - it seems like an invasion of privacy. Never the less, through my awkwardness, I attended this estate sale after seeing the advertisement on my local Kijiji boards.

The sale had been fairly picked over when I arrived. I did however find a gem. A Georges Briard cheeseboard. The family had placed this cheeseboard, along with all the other kitchen goodies, haphazardly on their kitchen table. I spotted it and riffled through the other items only to find it was in amazing condition. I'm not sure the knife was original with the cheeseboard, but I was glad to have one included. I've never found anything by Georges Briard, so I was very pleased to find this piece.

Close-up of the design
George Briard was an award-winning designer of housewares, mostly dish ware and glassware, active from the 1950s through the 1970s. Interestingly enough, Georges Briard was not the designers real name. He was born Jascha Brojdo, but would sign Georges Briard on commercial items. On other pieces of art he signed his birth name.

I did some searching for his other items and I would have to say that the enamelware pot is one of my favourites. I also love the brilliant roosters tea towels, I can be coaxed into buy any and all tea towels.

I'm going to have to keep my eyes out for more Briard, especially at estate sales.

Happy scavenging!
