Vintage Art Love-Paint By Numbers

Wednesday, 22 May 2013

Hello Friends!

I've just realized I have never shared my love of vintage art on the blog. So that's what we're going to look at today.

I have a small (five piece) collection of vintage paint by number paintings in my collection. Most of my collection has come from thrift stores, and through a vintage sell off sale in my local area.
Originally sold in the 1950s, paint by number kits came with a canvas, (usually just a thin board), and lines on the canvas indicating where the paint should be. There were numbers in each of the squares that would correspond with the paint number also included in the kit. The public response to the kits was astronomical - over 12 million of the Craft Master kits were sold within the first few years. This spawned other companies to create their own paint by number kits, which only furthered the popularity of the movement.

Many of the original paint by number artworks are on display at the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian. The combination of kitsch and uniqueness of the art has spawned a new resurrgence with younger generations - myself being one of them! I love the collection that I've started, and I can only hope to continue to collect as I find them.

Happy scavenging!
